Weight Loss Surgery Risks
Posted in Alternative Medicine on 01/18/2010 06:55 am by John SmithLosing weight is pretty stressful and “painful” process, and like every dieter, you would like to avoid extra worries, additional problems and complications. To give a boost to your slimming plan it’s not a bad idea to find a diet pill that works for you the best.
Correctly chosen slimming supplement can support your weight loss plan effectively and do a great deal of work for you. Another reason to choose this less risky option is that it is much safer than other popular option – weight loss surgery.
There are 4 main types of weight loss surgeries and all of them can be risky and can do more damage than good in some cases.
1. Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG). Basically during this surgery stomach gets separated (stapled) into 2 compartments where top one is smaller and bottom one is larger. After food arrives though the small opening it gets passed to the lower pouch. Band helps in preventing the expansion of that opening between the 2 sections of the stomach.
Risks of this surgery include band itself because it is prone to wearing and staple line which can break down causing the leakage of stomach juice into abdomen causing additional health problems.
2. Laparoscopic Gastric Banding (Lap-Band). This surgery mainly is performed on individuals who are seriously overweight. Band which is inflatable is placed around the upper part of the stomach. Usually this device is intended to be permanent. Size of the band can be changed.
Risk of band slippage and side effects such as vomiting, nausea and abdominal pain may make you reconsider choosing this surgery.
3. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RGB) surgery reduces the size of the stomach. It’s achieved by stapling the upper part creating a smaller pouch which is attached to the small intestine. Purpose of this surgery is to help you eat less and absorb fewer nutrients.
Leaking, diarrhoea, nausea are just few from number of possible side effects. Also “dumping syndrome” may be present because the food moves too quickly through the small intestine.
4. Biliopancreatic Diversion (BPD). Generally this surgery is complicated and is performed rarely. Size of the stomach is reduced by simply taking out a large part of it. It’s done to help you eat less and to reduce the stomach acid production.
As you can see, each of these surgeries come with risks and obviously traditional risk free weight loss methods is a better choice, unless you are not extremely obese and weight loss surgery is last resort to save your life.
